Located off the Venloer Strasse – main high street – in Ehrenfeld, the fabulous precinct on the outside of Cologne, when The Ehrenfeld opens its doors it is the place that many Cologne residents head to. Great at the beginning of a night or at the end of a night — or even both, without going anywhere else, why would you need to? — it’s somewhere with that magic, mystical charm that you just can’t reproduce. And I ended up there all because of the red diesel supplier that I work for.

I was in Germany on a business trip. My tasks were as follows: 1) learn about the German side of operations from the German manager, 2) gain valuable knowledge of what they were doing that was different from what we were doing and 3) have a good time. It was true that having a good time was just a passing remark more than an actual demand, but I have always been one to take my work very seriously. So when our German manager – Sven – demanded that we begin the night at The Ehrenfeld, who was I to say no? I didn’t want to insult the man, and so I gladly accepted every free drink he bestowed in me.

It’s true that if you’re after the finest German ale, it’d probably be better to try a more traditional venue. But what the bar lacks in tradition it makes up for in friendly service

You won’t notice The Ehrenfeld from afar. A series of blue lights are the only give away that it’s there at all, and once you ease your way through the felt curtains at the front you’ll see that this isn’t the kind of place where many strangers go. Instead, The Ehrenfeld has a loyal fan base that treat it as their second home, almost akin to the same way in which English pubs operate. It makes for a great atmosphere, and the place is small, with just two rooms – the second one full of comfortable couches that give the place a warm glow that is difficult not to fall in love with.

It’s true that if you’re after the finest German ale, it’d probably be better to try a more traditional venue. But what the bar lacks in tradition it makes up for in friendly service that is exceptionally swift. Be sure to try it out, especially if you’re on a business trip!

(Note: The Ehrenfeld doesn’t open routinely every day…instead it is liable to open sporadically. But that only increases the charm, as you never quite know when a wonderful night will be had by all!)

I have never figured out the concept of having a light breakfast. You know something like a slice of toast with a cup of tea. Or for that, skipping breakfast entirely! I am a breakfast person and I like to eat a really good one. I don’t mind having something light for lunch or dinner or not having one at all. But breakfast I must have or my dark streak is revealed.

Breakfast literally means breaking the fast – that long stretch of not eating after dinner while your body recoups. A good breakfast keeps our metabolism level going for the day and ups our energy levels. The brain gets sufficient juice to begin its activities. You are raring to go!

I work for a group of commercial letting agents and often need to spend the night in other cities. I always look for a place that offers bed and breakfast while staying over, since this saves me a considerable amount of time in the morning, as I don’t have to waste time hunting for a good place to have my breaker. You may not realise it, but the minutes add up. There are many great places to visit while you are in Norway but none are better than the capital city of Oslo. The city was founded in 1048 by King Harald III of Norway. In the year 1624 a vast portion of the city was destroyed by a fire. Later the city was rebuilt and called Christiania but in 1925 it got its name back.

I was much interested in heading to Norway after I had met a Norwegian chap from Oslo at a Manchester b and b. He spoke highly of his city and invited me to come and stay sometime. I asked him about some of the bed and breakfasts there and he gave me three options to check out.

They are:

Residence Kristinelund: This is a small but reasonable place to stay in the center of Oslo. It is off of Bydgey Alle on of the most famous streets in Norway. Located on a hillside it has a beautiful garden and the building comes right out of the 1800’s architectural style. This bed and breakfasts location allows you to walk to any of the major sites in Oslo including the Akershus Castle and the National Museum.

Catalina Apartments: These apartments are fully furnished and are located in the best district of Oslo. There are about 500 rooms available for a short or long time stay. They are on the west side of Oslo and close to the buses, trams and subway.

Staksrud B&B: There are 3 double rooms that can be changed into triple room. You are able to relax and enjoy many tourist sites. There is a TV in every room and is non smoking. The bathroom is shared and the parking is on the street. It is just 10 minutes from the city itself.

Also guests can get information about the town and all the more interesting places to visit. You can get your morning paper and lazy around reading it.

This is a great place to visit and chances are you will never want to leave.

Today’s Manchester can probably be summed up by the football or soccer team Manchester City. It must have been created by a malicious idle mind who takes delight in tormenting human beings, particularly males. This also includes back slapping, hugging and all kinds of acrobatic displays. Why don’t they form a Barney troupe? The children will surely appreciate. The ensuing eruption defies sense. Even in the stands, they try to outdo one another hooting, honking, stamping and clapping and generally making a nuisance of them. Pray, over what? A ball stopped in its track by a net? But since they are in the company of other Barney hopefuls, nobody seems to mind anybody. And the beat goes on, a renewable source of cardiac arrests. Help needed, to save the public from itself.
