Manchester’s Football Supremacy

It has been the European City of Culture. It is home to two of Europe’s top football teams, and it is also known as the place of ‘Curry Mile’. Incidentally, it is also humorously considered to be Britain’s, if not Europe’s, most rainy city.

This is Manchester. Not far from the coast where its great rival Liverpool is situated, which in times past a major port city. Manchester is also not far from the coal mines of northern England.

Manchester’s museums cover both wonderful art paintings and the sewers of the burgeoning city. They focus on the city’s industrial past, but that reflects a wonderful mirror onto Britain’s murky, smoky, dusty heritage. The UK is the home of the industrial revolution, and nowhere is that more evident than in Manchester, where modern money meets past progress.

Today’s Manchester can probably be summed up by the football or soccer team Manchester City. Its new, multi-billionaire owners will, no doubt, ensure the club’s success in the next few years, but for football followers this nouveau ariviste success is no substitute for the hard-owned achievements reached by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson.

Sir Alex is probably the most successful football manager in British history. Although a Scot himself, his professional career has been spent in England, managing Manchester United. Some of the football players who he has nurtured and cherished include Wales’s Ryan Giggs, who along with George Best of Northern Ireland ranks as one of the world’s greatest players who never got to go to the World Cup.
